Zuckerberg disproves Ayn Rand (as does everyone else though)

Ayn Rand said: Civilization is the progress toward a society of privacy. The savage’s whole existence is public, ruled by the laws of his tribe. Civilization is the process of setting man free from men.
Mark Zuckerberg says the world is social and his enormous success has been based on man/woman’s desire to connect with each other. Zuckerberg is at the forefront of an astounding social change that has seen privacy replaced by public exposure, this is now our civilisation and our progress.
See the video of him talking at the Web 2.0 Summit 2010 here. See all the other videos including one from Eric Schmidt of Google here.

  1. Every man is unique. What Rand is saying is that civilization is the process of acknowledging this fact. Civilization is the process of not taking any individual for granted. He’s free to make his own choices.

That says nothing about a person wanting or not wanting human contact. All people I know – and very much so with people who like Rand – is that they immensely enjoy human contact. The more you are acknowledged as an individual, the more you enjoy human contact because it is free and without strings attached. Collectivists and people who see people as the group(s) they belong to, bring expectations to their relationships that place stresses on those relationships.

My opinion of Mark Zuckerberg from this piece is that he’s not a very deep thinker.
