Library of Congress to archive the Twitterverse

The Library of Congress have just announced that they are going to archive Twitter, and they used their own Twitter stream to make their original announcement. Starting with its inception in 2006 and with around 50 million tweets being added daily to the Twitterverse, that’s a lot of ground to cover!

  1. Excellent news. It is good that the LoC has the prominence and capacity to receive this sort of collection. There are many such US based services which it would be good to see deposited with them. There is always the concern that very large conglomerations of content can be lost when they are part of a commercial enterprise – GeoCities being a good example. It would be good if facebook, wordpress, blogger and LiveJournal were also preserved as their loss would be of critical importance. Then there is Bebo, of which rumours of closure are rife.
